Trauma Therapy

  • Occupational therapy for trauma is about reconnecting with your environment and rediscovering the enjoyment life has to offer. Traumatic experiences are disorienting due to the intensely painful emotional event(s) to which they are tied. Similar to a water ripple effect, the occurrence and the pain are relived in successive waves over months or years.
  • It is not uncommon for someone with post traumatic stress to struggle in some or all areas of occupational performance (such as social, leisure, work, and /or self-care activities).
  • Many people find psychotherapy difficult as they are required to re-experience distressing events in order to reprocess those experiences.  Occupational therapy is less threatening and does not require triggering the emotions related to the trauma.  It is a good starting point to regain the joy and empowerment needed to overcome the challenges that chronic pain and accompanying grief, anxiety, and depression can bring.
